We have had community viewings for UPSTANDERS in October and LIKE in February. The final movie, ANGST will be shown to the community on May 5th from 6-8 PM. ANGST: On top of academic and social stress, the uncertainty and fears of this past pandemic year have brought all of us a lot more anxiety than before. Angst helps break this down, explaining what’s going on, and what we can do about it to help both ourselves and others. It features World Champion Swimmer Michael Phelps, experts in the field, and regular teenagers.

LIKE is an IndieFlix Original documentary about finding a balance in our digital world. Technology is a tool. It’s here to stay and social platforms are a place to connect, share and care, but what’s really happening? Are we addicted? How do we stop? Where do we start? What do we need to know? By understanding the effects of technology and social media on the brain, on our lives and on our civilization, we can learn how to navigate it more safely together.
Students in Ms. Cullinan's advisory created memes about school and learning this year. Students are experiencing a year like no other and Ms. Cullinan encourages students to connect with each other in many ways through their shared experiences. On December 15, we heard from Sarah Paradis (a district Speech Therapist), that her 5 year old son was adamant about doing something to help others. After looking into a few options, they settled on donating snacks and other non-perishables to GBS. On Friday, December 18th they delivered their donation. Thank you so much to the Paradis family. Our middle-schoolers will certainly appreciate the extra snacks!
As we come to the week of Thanksgiving, I have so many things to be thankful for.
I am thankful for...
...the whole Bobcat community for welcoming me as the new principal here at GBS in such an unprecedented time. Your grace, flexibility, and understanding has been humbling.
...an amazing staff, who have gone above and beyond to reopen our doors and do everything (and more) within their powers to educate our students.
...our students who have worked within the safety guidelines, even when it was hard, to be the best Bobcats they could be.
...for the 51 days we have had together this fall to learn, grow, and experience all of this together as a school and a community.

Though its hallways are less crowded than ever, Great Brook School students are still sharing their art with their community.
Since September, art teacher Victoria Burnham has been posting student artwork on the @bobcatstudioartists Instagram page. The art is usually hung throughout the school for visitors to enjoy. However, since visitors now have limited access to the school building due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Instagram page allows both community members and fully remote students to stay connected to the school's artistic endeavors.
Art from the fifth through eighth graders in Pod 3 is up on the page currently, but Burnham will be sharing the work from all students over the coming months.
"Our teachers are really going above and beyond, and the students are doing great work," Principal Foecking said. “Efforts like this help keep our school community together and make sure everyone is as connected as possible. I'm beyond proud of the work our students and teachers have done since the start of the school year, and am glad to have this opportunity to share their work with community members."
Students are connecting with their remote peers in other classes as well. For example, during science labs, two students who are learning in-person will work with one of their remote peers via Zoom to complete the work so that all three can work together.
“During this unprecedented time, it's incredible to have the opportunity to foster and maintain the community relationships that allow our students to thrive," Superintendent Rizzo Saunders said. “It's amazing to see what these students create and we love being able to share their creative work with others."

Students and teachers at GBS are re-imagining how to "do school" this year. Even though we can't use most of our tents yet, classes are happening outside. Students are connecting with their teachers, as well as their in-person and remote peers. Teachers are finding new and creative ways to engage their students academically while supporting their social-emotional needs. Our classrooms are expanding beyond the four walls and teachers and students are taking advantage of these opportunities.
Even though our tents aren't quite ready for use - teachers are still taking advantage of the good weather to conduct classes outside. We are anticipating the good news that we can use the tents as outdoor learning spaces, but until then...we will get creative!
